Plenty of travelers use Kunming as a transfer point: one night, a lap of Green Lake, then the morning train to Dali. Locals think that misses the point. Kunming is a city built for ordinary days at an easy pace. There's a noodle shop on every corner, the parks fill with people singing and dancing, and plane trees shade the old lanes along the Panlong River.
This route is three slow days on foot, by metro and by short taxi rides, with no early starts except for breakfast noodles. Stay near Green Lake all three nights. Nothing here climbs much above the city's 1,900 m, so it also makes a gentle warm-up before Dali, Lijiang or Shangri-La.
Day by day
Day 1 Green Lake and the university quarter
Keep within a 20-minute walk of Green Lake today, and eat your way around it.
- Morning Start with tofu-pudding rice noodles 豆花米线: soft tofu, minced pork and a savory-sweet sauce over noodles. Older residents eat at Nanmen Douhua Mixian 南门豆花米线, opposite the lake's south gate (about ¥11), or at Chenxi 晨曦豆花米线, a shop that has been on the corner of Qianju Street 钱局街 for over 20 years (¥9–12). Then walk into Green Lake Park 翠湖公园 while it's busiest. Retirees practice tai chi and fan dances, amateur choirs sing under the willows, and card games draw small crowds. From about November to March, gulls winter on the lake.
- Late morning Yunnan Military Academy 云南陆军讲武堂 on the west shore is free with a passport reservation and closed on Mondays. Then walk up to the Donglu campus of Yunnan University 云南大学东陆校区 for its 1920s buildings and ginkgo avenue. Bring your passport, since visitors may have to register at the gate, and access can pause during exams.
- Lunch Small-pot rice noodles 小锅米线, the Kunming staple. Duanshi 端仕小锅米线 near Wenlin Street 文林街 is a century-old name whose ersi noodles 饵丝 are just as good. Banpo 半坡小锅米线, in the old lanes near the south gate, gives big pieces of pork (about ¥15) but has serious queues at mealtimes. Qinghe 青和小锅米线 is known for a version with stinky tofu and usually has a shorter line (¥12–13).
- Afternoon Walk 15 minutes northeast to Yuantong Temple 圆通寺, one of the city's oldest. Unusually, you walk downhill from the gate to the main hall, and halls of Chinese, Theravada and Tibetan Buddhism share the same grounds. Keep your voice down and don't photograph people at prayer.
- Evening Dinner at Xilou 熙楼 by the lake's west gate, which cooks the food of Simao in Pu'er. Order tomato with water fern 番茄炒水蕨菜, Pu'er stir-fried chicken 普洱小炒鸡, mint-fried pork ribs 薄荷炸排骨 and banana flower 芭蕉花. Diners take queue numbers through an app, so arrive right at opening or ask your hotel to help. Afterward, look for the masseurs around the edge of Green Lake, some of them blind, who work roughly 6–10 pm. They'll point out where you're stiff and teach you a stretch or two.
Overnight: Kunming, Green Lake area
Day 2 Old streets and plane-tree lanes
Young locals compare this walk to Shanghai's plane-tree lanes. It covers about 2 km in two hours, and it's best between 10 am and 4 pm on a weekday, when the light comes through the trees and the cafés are quiet. Weekend afternoons fill up with photo shoots.
- Breakfast Yuanji Laoyiwan 元吉老一碗小锅米线, a neighborhood noodle shop near the old streets where most customers are local (about ¥12).
- Morning Start at the East and West Pagodas 东寺塔 · 西寺塔, two brick towers first raised in the Nanzhao kingdom more than a thousand years ago and rebuilt since. Wander Shulin Street 书林街 for its independent bookshops, then Jingde Lane 敬德巷, all yellow walls, red brick and plane trees.
- Midday Tiepi Lane 铁皮巷 packs five or more cafés into about 100 m. Head for Zhen Gaoxing Coffee 真高兴咖啡 and Shangshan Tea 上山喝茶, whose second-floor terrace sits among the treetops. Try a Yunnan black tea latte 滇红拿铁 or something made with tamarind 酸角.
- Afternoon Finish on Xunjin Street 巡津街 beside the Panlong River 盘龙江. After the railway from French-ruled Vietnam reached Kunming in 1910, French businesses clustered here, and a few low buildings from that era survive. For a quieter hour, take a short taxi to Zhenqing Taoist Temple 真庆观, a complex with Yuan-dynasty roots where locals drink tea under old trees while incense drifts across the courtyard.
- Evening Barbecue, the way Kunming ends a day. Jianghu Yizhandeng 江湖一盏灯 has grilled for more than 30 years. Order the braised-then-grilled chicken feet, pig's trotters and beef skewers. Walk it off around the Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Archway 金马碧鸡坊 and Nanping Street 南屏街, where the night stalls sell grilled rushan cheese and flower cakes.
Overnight: Kunming, same hotel
Day 3 Golden Temple and a Dianchi sunset
A forest morning on the edge of town, the lake in the afternoon and a long dinner.
- Morning Golden Temple Park 金殿公园 on Mingfeng Mountain 鸣凤山, about 30 minutes by taxi. Its centerpiece is a Taoist hall cast entirely in bronze in the 1600s, set in pine forest where locals come to walk and sing. Entry is free but needs a real-name booking made in advance on a Chinese app, so ask your hotel to book it with your passport details; the cable car costs extra. The loop is mostly steps and forest paths. Walk it in this order: north gate, Taihe Palace 太和宫, the Golden Temple, the bell tower, then out by the east gate. Prefer a garden? Tanhua Temple Park 昙华寺公园, east of the center, has red temple walls, a pagoda and a flowered hillside where residents come to unwind.
- Afternoon Head to Dianchi Lake 滇池 on Metro Line 5 to Yinghai Road 迎海路 (exit A for the dam), or by taxi. Haigeng Dam 海埂大坝 is free and full of gulls in winter. Haihong Wetland 海洪湿地 has dawn-redwood groves you can row among. Save quieter Baofeng Wetland 宝丰湿地 for sunset.
- Evening From June to September, wild mushroom hotpot. Junhai Senlin 菌海森林 has served it for about 20 years; add the ganba mushroom fried rice 干巴菌炒饭. Wait until staff say the pot is ready. Out of season, go to Dounan Flower Market 斗南花市, which comes alive in the evening. End with a foot soak: Kunming's new-style wellness spas offer a mugwort foot soak, massage and a roughly 90-minute ginger steam wrap made with highland ginger.
Overnight: Kunming, same hotel
Make it your own
Add the Stone Forest (one more day)
The Stone Forest 石林 is a UNESCO-listed field of limestone pillars in the homeland of the Sani, a branch of the Yi people. Take the 30-minute bullet train from Kunming South to Shilin West 石林西站, then a shuttle or taxi, or drive about 1.5 hours. Arrive at opening, then ride the scenic-area shuttle about 9 km to the quieter Naigu Stone Forest 乃古石林. Avoid Chinese public holidays, and skip the cheap group day trips, which are where shopping stops turn up. Here's why we skip them. The Sani celebrate the Torch Festival here on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month (July 27 in 2027), with bonfires, wrestling and dancing; check dates on our festival calendar.
Only two days?
Do Day 1 as written. On Day 2, walk the old streets in the morning, then head to Dianchi for sunset and finish with mushroom hotpot or barbecue.
Other swaps
- Rainy day: The Yunnan Provincial Museum 云南省博物馆 in Guandu, for Dian-kingdom bronzes. Reserve ahead; it's closed on Mondays.
- Art: Tuzhuchao 土著巢, a cluster of hand-built brick houses by the artist Luo Xu. Visits are by reservation, and craft sessions need to start before 2 pm.
- Sweet stops: Rose egg tarts at BA's Green Lake shop (order by QR code), flower cakes at Panxiangji 潘祥记 by the south gate, or milk rice pudding at Yunping 云平风味园鲜奶米哺, open for about 30 years.
- Keep going: Take the train to Dali on the classic route, or head south on the southeast terraces route.
Good to know
Eating
Locals say you could eat rice noodles every day for a year without repeating a bowl. Small-pot, tofu-pudding, crossing-the-bridge, cold noodles and erkuai are just the start. Their other advice is blunt: neighborhood noodle shops beat internet-famous ones by a mile. The Green Lake branch of Aozaoguan 凹糟馆 is poor value. Most places take orders by QR code or pointing; say bù là (不辣) for no chili. Our Kunming food guide has ordering phrases, and payments covers setting up Alipay.
Timing
- The Military Academy closes on Mondays, so swap Days 1 and 3 if you arrive on a Sunday night.
- Walk the old streets on a weekday. Weekend afternoons are crowded.
- Gulls winter here from about November to March, the ginkgos turn gold in late November and December, and mushroom season runs roughly June to September. Popular hotpot places queue for an hour.
Getting around
The center is walkable, the metro covers the rest, and ride-hailing works through Alipay with a foreign card. Many bullet trains leave from Kunming South Station, 45–60 minutes from Green Lake, so leave plenty of time on your departure day. See trains.
Go deeper
Kunming is the easiest city in Yunnan to spend time with local people: a dinner in a family home, dawn tai chi in the park, a tea tasting or a morning at a Taoist temple. See our local experiences, which we arrange as part of a tailor-made trip.
