Haigeng Dam gulls: be there around 8 am, not at midday
Dianchi Lake, Kunming
Every winter thousands of black-headed gulls, known locally as red-billed gulls, gather along Haigeng Dam with the Western Hills across the water. They feed hardest in the morning; once visitors have fed them their fill, they scatter, which is why some midday visitors find the dam almost empty. Afterward, carry on to the dawn-redwood groves of Haihong Wetland.
What locals sayThose who came at noon complained the gulls had gone; those who came early describe clouds of birds swooping around them.
