Guandu District, Kunming, off the Kunming–Shilin road
Kunming artist Luo Xu spent years building these domed, cave-like structures from more than 3 million bricks of Yunnan red earth, with no steel or nails. They now house his museum, with his sculpture inside, plus a café serving light meals. It's one of the city's most unusual buildings and rarely crowded.
What locals sayVisitors describe a surreal, hand-built world, though some find the art itself an acquired taste.
