Lijiang is the Naxi heartland of northwest Yunnan: a UNESCO-listed old town of canals and tiled roofs, a ring of farming villages at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and, four to five hours to the northeast, Lugu Lake on the Sichuan border.

Tour groups still arrive by the trainload, but repeat visitors now do Lijiang differently. The old town is where you sleep and eat. The reason to stay three or four days is the countryside, where you can stand under the snow peaks without a mountain ticket.

How locals do it

Prices as of 2026; check before you go.

Base yourself in a courtyard inn on the quiet edge of the old town, or in Shuhe 束河古镇 if you want calm evenings. Walk the lanes at 7 a.m., before the shutters go up, spend the day outside town, and come back for dinner. Our Lijiang guide covers the old town and main sights in detail.

The favorite day out gives you the mountain without the Jade Dragon ticket scramble. Start in Baisha 白沙古镇, 30 minutes by taxi, where Ming- and Qing-era murals survive in the old temple halls and older Naxi women rinse prinsepia berries in the stream. Move on to Hutuwo Pasture 糊涂窝牧场, which charges entry, for open meadow facing the peaks, then Yuhu village 玉湖村 as the light drops. Finish at a small free pasture nearby, said to be kept by an elderly couple.

Yuhu runs a shuttle for day visitors, about ¥39, roughly 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. A private car can only drive in if you have booked a meal or a room in the village and registered the plate, or before 6 a.m. and after 5:30 p.m. Rules like this change, so check locally.

Keep one morning for the markets where residents actually shop, and one clear day for a big excursion: the Jade Dragon glacier park if you have tickets (read our Jade Dragon guide) or Tiger Leaping Gorge on the border with Diqing. With a week, add Lugu Lake and sleep in Daluoshui village 大落水村 on the Yunnan shore; see our Lugu Lake guide.

Time it right and you can catch Sanduo, the Naxi people's own festival in early spring, or the summer Torch Festival; dates are on our festivals page.

Where locals eat

Zhongshun Restaurant 忠顺饭店

A Naxi home-cooking canteen by Zhongyi Market where residents eat. Order hong san duo 红三剁 (pork, tomato and red chili chopped together), fried ribs, wok-fried yak and "granny's potatoes" 老奶洋芋, mashed and pan-crisped.

Lunch or dinner · Zhongyi Market area · Share 3–4 dishes

Song Jiejie Wild Mushroom Hotpot 宋姐姐野生菌火锅

A long-running mushroom hotpot with several branches around town, known for pairing the mushrooms with yak meat. Fresh wild mushrooms are best in the rainy season; let the staff time the pot, since they must be fully cooked.

Dinner · Best Jun–Sep · Follow the staff's timer

Hongxing Clay Pot 虹兴砂锅

A clay-pot shop tucked under an apartment block in an older residential district, away from the tourist core. Pick beef, ribs, mushrooms or beef offal, bubbling in its own pot with rice on the side.

Lunch or dinner · Residential lanes · A cold-evening favorite

Baisha village kitchens 白沙古镇

Lunch on the village day. Look for Dongba ribs 东巴骨, braised pork ribs; yak on a sizzling iron plate; "snow mountain fish" with chopped chili 剁椒雪山鱼; and Naxi fried rice.

Lunch · Pair with Hutuwo and Yuhu

Shuhe side-street diners 束河

Walk a few lanes back from the main streams. Order Naxi stir-fried pork and haicaihua 海菜花, the crisp flower stems of a water plant that grows only in clean lakes. Dishes in the scenic lanes start around ¥30; local places charge noticeably less.

Lunch or dinner · Eat away from the main lanes

Zhongyi Market snacks 忠义市场

Come early for Lijiang baba flatbread, chicken bean jelly (a bean jelly, no chicken) and whatever fruit is in season. Jinjia Market 金甲市场 is the other residents' market, with fair prices on fresh produce.

Breakfast · Before 9 a.m. · Small stalls, mobile pay

Hidden corners and free viewpoints

Bailong Cultural Square 白龙文化广场

A free square for framing the old town's tiled roofs and Jade Dragon together. Come on a clear morning, before the haze and the crowds.

20 minutes · Free · Clear mornings

Zhongyi Market at dawn 忠义市场

On a clear day the snow peaks rise above the vegetable stalls, which makes this one of the few viewpoints that comes with breakfast.

30–60 minutes · Free · Early morning

Black Dragon Pool 黑龙潭公园

The classic shot of Jade Dragon reflected in still water, with a marble bridge and pavilion. Entry is free with your old-town maintenance-fee receipt, which is valid for seven days, so keep it; your hotel can tell you how to pay the fee.

1 hour · Free with receipt · Best around 8 a.m.

The pasture past Yuhu 爷爷种的菜

A small pasture near Yuhu said to have been built by an elderly couple, known by the name above ("the vegetables Grandpa grows"). They describe snow-peak views, tame animals and no ticket.

30 minutes · Free · Family-run, so ask your driver if it's open

Baoshan Stone Town 宝山石头城

A Naxi village built on top of a single great rock above the Jinsha River, in rural Yulong county, a long drive from the city. Public transport is poor and rooms are simple, which is exactly why it still feels lived in.

Overnight trip · Private driver · Basic guesthouses

Honest verdicts

  • Baisha, Hutuwo and Yuhu are worth a full day, because you get snow peaks, village life and animals without the Jade Dragon ticket rush.
  • Jade Dragon's glacier park depends on the weather and on booking about seven days ahead, since in cloud it becomes a long, costly queue.
  • Lijiang Old Town is lovely at 7 a.m. and feels like one long shopping street by late morning, so walk it early and late.
  • Yundi'an Café 云堤岸咖啡 is overrated: you pay through the café for the view, and its famous "lake" reflection comes from polished floor tiles.
  • Bonfire shows in Lijiang and at Lugu Lake are staged and forgettable, and reviews say so again and again.
  • Lugu Lake is worth the 4–5 hour drive if you can spare two nights, and it is the extension most worth adding.

Getting there and around

  • By train: About 1.5 hours from Dali, 3.5–4 hours from Kunming (most Lijiang trains leave from Kunming Station 昆明站, not Kunming South) and 1.5 hours on to Shangri-La. Book with your passport on the 12306 app or Trip.com; see trains.
  • By air: Lijiang's airport has direct flights from Kunming and many other Chinese cities.
  • In town: The old town is car-free. Taxis and ride-hailing cover Shuhe, Baisha and Black Dragon Pool.
  • Villages and gorges: For the Baisha–Yuhu loop, Tiger Leaping Gorge or Baoshan Stone Town, a driver saves hours. Agree the route and total price in writing first; we can arrange one at a fixed price.
  • Lugu Lake: Buses leave Lijiang's passenger station for about ¥70 one way, 4–5 hours; lake entry is about ¥70.

Festivals and seasons

Spring Festival (Lunar New Year)

February · Nationwide

Spring Festival (Lunar New Year) 春节

Next: 6 Feb 2027

China's biggest holiday. In the run-up, Kunming's Dounan Flower Market 斗南花市 sells armfuls of blooms for the home, families gather on New Year's Eve for a reunion dinner, and in the first days of the year temples such as Yuantong Temple 圆通寺 fill with people burning incense for luck. Warm Xishuangbanna and the old towns of Dali and Lijiang are favorite holiday escapes for families from across China.

How to join: Visit a temple on the first or second morning of the year, walk a flower market, or ask to share a family's reunion dinner. Book trains and rooms well ahead: this is the busiest travel period of the year and prices climb sharply.

Etiquette: Wish people 'xin nian kuai le' (Happy New Year) and avoid talk of death or illness. Many small restaurants and shops close for the first three days.

Where: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Xishuangbanna

March · Naxi

Sanduo Festival 三朵节

Next: 15 Mar 2027

The Naxi honor Sanduo, their protector god and the spirit of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, with offerings, Dongba priests chanting and big circle dances. Recent editions have opened with a torch relay carrying a sacred flame from Baisha to the main celebration in Lijiang's new town.

How to join: Join the circle dancing at the main public celebration in Lijiang's new town, where anyone can link arms (ask your hotel for that year's venue), or visit Sanduo's own temple, the Beiyue Temple 北岳庙 near Baisha, to see families making offerings.

Etiquette: Let worshippers go first at the temple and keep clear of the space where Dongba priests are chanting.

Where: Lijiang

Wild mushroom season

June · Season

Wild mushroom season 野生菌季

Next: Jun–Sep 2027 (peak Jul–Aug)

When the summer rains arrive, the whole province turns to wild mushrooms: markets fill with porcini, termite mushrooms, chanterelles and matsutake, and hotpot restaurants build their menus around them. Kunming's Mushuihua Wild Mushroom Market 木水花野生菌交易市场 shows the full range, Nanhua county in Chuxiong is famous for its mushroom trade, and Shangri-La is matsutake country.

How to join: Order a wild-mushroom hotpot at a busy, established restaurant and wait the full cooking time the staff give you before eating. For a foraging walk, go with a local guide.

Etiquette: Never eat mushrooms you or a stranger picked unless an experienced local picker has checked them and a restaurant cooks them, and make sure jianshouqing 见手青 is cooked through: undercooked, it causes hallucinations and puts people in hospital every summer.

Where: Kunming, Chuxiong, Lijiang, Diqing

Torch Festival

July · Yi, Bai and Naxi

Torch Festival 火把节

Next: 27 Jul 2027; events run several days

The biggest night of the Yi year: torches lit from a ceremonial fire are carried around fields and villages to drive off pests and bad luck, then piled into bonfires for dancing late into the night. Chuxiong runs the largest program at the Yi Ten-Month Solar Calendar Culture Park 彝族十月太阳历文化园 and Yi Ancient Town 彝人古镇, the Sani celebrate at the Stone Forest with wrestling and bullfights, Bai villages around Dali raise tall decorated torches a day later, and near Puzhehei the festivities become the Flower Face Festival 花脸节.

How to join: Base yourself in Chuxiong, where the opening ceremony and nightly bonfire dancing are open to everyone, or visit a village celebration with a local guide. Anyone can join the circle dances: take the hands on either side and follow the steps.

Etiquette: People toss pine-resin powder onto torches to make them flare as a blessing, so wear cotton rather than synthetics and tie back long hair. Book Chuxiong rooms early.

Where: Chuxiong, Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Honghe, Wenshan

Mountain-Circling Festival at Lugu Lake

August · Mosuo

Mountain-Circling Festival at Lugu Lake 转山节

Next: 26 Aug 2027

The Mosuo honor Gemu, the goddess of the mountain above Lugu Lake's north shore, by walking around its foot, burning juniper at shrines and hanging prayer flags. The rest of the day is for picnics, horse racing, singing and circle dancing.

How to join: Be at Gemu Mountain 格姆女神山 early in the morning, when families set out; visitors are welcome to walk with them and join the dancing later. Stay in Lige 里格 or Daluoshui 大落水村.

Etiquette: Walk clockwise with everyone else, don't step over incense or offerings, and ask before photographing women in traditional dress.

Where: Lijiang
