Wengding Wa village: time your visit for the wooden-drum ceremony
Mengjiao, Cangyuan County
The thatched Wa village burned in February 2021 and was rebuilt on the same site, reopening at the end of 2022. Most residents now live in a new village below and come back by day to run the site: weaving, rice wine and chicken-porridge tastings in the houses, and scheduled performances that include pulling the great wooden drum. Ask at the gate for the performance times and plan your visit around one.
What locals sayMost posts still rate the thatched houses and buffalo-skull posts, but point out that since the fire the old village is a showcase with set performances rather than a lived-in home.
