Cangyuan cliff paintings: 3,000-year-old hunters in morning light

Menglai, north of Cangyuan town

Red figures of hunters, dancers, animals and villages painted in hematite pigment on limestone cliffs; recent dating puts them at roughly 2,700 to 3,800 years old. Local tradition links them to the ancestors of the Wa. Come in the morning, when the light on the rock makes the figures easiest to read.

What locals sayRegulars advise going in the morning, when the light makes the figures easiest to see.
