Jianshui Confucian Temple, one of the largest in China
Jianshui old town
Founded in 1285, under the Yuan dynasty, and expanded over the following centuries, it is one of China's largest Confucian temples, usually ranked just behind those in Qufu, Confucius's hometown, and Beijing. A large pond called the Sea of Learning (学海) lies in front of the halls and gates. It's a reminder that this frontier town once produced an unusual number of successful imperial-exam scholars.
What locals sayMany travelers say it's the one sight in Jianshui not to miss, and bigger and calmer than they expected.
