Wenshan 文山 sits in Yunnan's far southeast, against the borders of Vietnam and Guangxi. This is karst country, where cone-shaped limestone hills rise straight out of lakes and rice fields. Most visitors come for two places. Puzhehei 普者黑 in Qiubei county is a chain of lakes and lotus beds between green peaks, often called Yunnan's "little Guilin." Bamei 坝美 in Guangnan county is a Zhuang village you can only reach by boat through a cave.
It's a summer trip. At around 1,450 m, Puzhehei stays mild, with days usually in the mid-20s °C, just as the lotus flowers. The prefecture is also the center of China's sanqi (notoginseng) herb trade, and home to large Zhuang, Miao and Yi communities.
How locals do it
Prices as of 2026; check before you go.
Two or three slow days at Puzhehei. Take the bullet train from Kunming South to Puzhehei station and base yourself in Xianrendong 仙人洞村. It's a Yi village with lakeside guesthouses and restaurants, and it's pleasant to stroll at night. Puzhehei village 普者黑村 is closer to Qinglong Mountain, and villages near the main gate are cheaper.
Build each day around the light. Take a boat among the lotus early in the morning. Have a long lunch of lake fish and lotus dishes, then rest through the midday heat. After 4 pm, climb Qinglong Mountain 青龙山 for sunset, or walk to Lovers' Bridge 情人桥.
Then one night inside Bamei. Most visitors come on a day trip and leave on the last boat around 5 pm. Stay overnight and you get the valley to yourself: mist at dawn, a two-hour walk through the fields, a Zhuang dinner eaten by hand and a sky full of stars. Bamei is about 1.5 hours by hired car from Puzhehei.
Timing matters. Lotus peaks from about late June through August. In Bamei, canola turns the fields yellow in March, and the rice ripens in October. Around the Yi Torch Festival, which falls between mid-July and mid-August, Puzhehei hosts the Flower Face Festival 花脸节, when people smear each other with black straw ash for luck. Rooms fill up fast then; see our festival calendar.
Wenshan pairs well with the terraces and old towns of Honghe on our free southeast route. Our karst valleys route goes deeper into this limestone country.
Where locals eat
Lotus feast 荷花宴
Village restaurants cook with what grows in the lake: lotus flowers, leaves and root, including egg stir-fried with lotus. Xianrendong has the widest choice.
Wild-tomato sour fish 野生番茄酸汤鱼
Lake fish in a sour broth made tart with small wild tomatoes. It's the dish to order at Puzhehei. Guesthouse kitchens also do sour-soup chicken or beef, and a clear-broth fish 清汤鱼 for anyone who wants it mild.
Sanqi steam-pot chicken 三七汽锅鸡
Wenshan grows most of China's sanqi, a medicinal root, and adds it to Yunnan's classic steam-pot chicken. It's the dish to order if you pass through Wenshan city or its airport.
Zhuang dustpan feast in Bamei 簸箕宴
Dinner is laid out on a round bamboo winnowing tray: five-color sticky rice, smoked pork and wild greens, all shared and eaten by hand. It comes with home-brewed rice wine.
Hidden corners and free viewpoints
Qinglong Mountain lookout 青龙山观景台
A 20-minute climb leads to a view over the lakes, villages and peaks. Sunrise is around 6–7 am and sunset 7–8 pm in summer, and the light softens from about 4 pm.
Lovers' Bridge 情人桥
An easy evening spot where the path crosses water between lotus ponds and paddies, with the low sun on the peaks from about 6 to 8 pm.
Bamei's field loop 坝美 田园环线
This footpath circles the valley floor past the fields, Zhuang houses and an ancient banyan tree in about two hours. Walk it early, when mist still hangs on the cliffs.
Bamei after the last boat 坝美
Once the day visitors leave, the valley goes quiet. Watch bamboo rafts silhouetted on the flooded fields at dusk, then look up: there's little light pollution here.
Honest verdicts
- Puzhehei in lotus season is worth it if you take the boat early or late, when the light is soft and the heat bearable.
- A night in Bamei is worth it, because the valley only feels like a hidden world once the day-trippers have gone.
- Puzhehei's Swan Lake 天鹅湖 (about ¥145 with its shuttle) and the set built for a TV drama (about ¥30) are overrated add-ons next to the free views.
- The tram outside Puzhehei station is overrated, because it only goes to the visitor center, not to the villages where you'll sleep.
- Puzhehei from October to May depends on your route: the peaks and lakes are still there, but without the lotus it's a stop rather than a destination.
- Wenshan city depends on your plans: it's mainly a transfer point with an airport, so stop for sanqi chicken but don't plan days there.
Getting there and around
- To Puzhehei: Bullet trains from Kunming South take about 1–1.5 hours, and a ticket costs about ¥75. Outside the station, take bus 8 to Xianrendong or Puzhehei village for about ¥5, or a taxi for about ¥60–80. See trains.
- To Bamei: A hired car from Puzhehei takes about 1.5 hours and costs about ¥200. You can also take the train on to Guangnan county station 广南县站 and continue about an hour by road. Entry to the valley, including the boats through the caves, is about ¥85–100. Boats run roughly 8:30 am to 5 pm.
- By air: Wenshan's airport 文山砚山机场 has flights from other Chinese cities.
