Sleep in Nuodeng, a salt-well village famous for its ham
Nuodeng, Yunlong county, about 2.5 hours' drive west of Dali
A Bai village that grew rich on a brine well used for more than a thousand years, with courtyard houses stacked up a steep valley side. It's known across China for Nuodeng ham, cured with the local salt. Stay with a family guesthouse, have the ham for dinner and walk the stone steps at dawn before anyone else is up.
What locals sayMost posts call it a thousand-year-old Bai village that still lives the old way, and say the ham alone justifies the drive.
