Tengchong volcano park: balloons fly early, roughly 7–10 am

Volcano Geopark, north of Tengchong

Climb Dakong Shan for a view over the cones and look into the crater at Xiaokong Shan. The hot-air balloons that make the famous photos fly early in the morning, roughly 7–10 am, and are grounded by wind or rain, so go early.

What locals sayTravelers say the balloons make the visit; without them, it's a short climb up a grassy crater.
