Kunming

Yunnan's mild gateway city: lake walks, winter gulls and the province's best noodles.

Almost every Yunnan trip starts in Kunming, and many travelers leave for Dali the next morning. Give it two days instead. At about 1,900 m, the provincial capital is mild most of the year, easy on first-timers and the best place in Yunnan to eat.

Don't expect a postcard old town; much of the historic core has been rebuilt. Spend one day on foot around Green Lake and the old center, and the other along Dianchi Lake, at the museum or out at the Stone Forest.

Top things to do

Prices as of 2026; check before you go.

Green Lake Park 翠湖公园

The city's living room, with willow-lined causeways where locals dance, sing and play cards. From about November to March, black-headed gulls (locals call them red-billed gulls) winter here and swoop for crumbs.

1–2 hours · Free · Best Nov–Mar, early morning

Yunnan Military Academy 云南陆军讲武堂

A mustard-yellow parade-ground complex on the west side of Green Lake, founded in 1909 as an officers' school. Entry is free but must be reserved in advance with your passport details.

About 1 hour · Free with reservation · Closed Mondays

Yunnan University, Donglu Campus 云南大学东陆校区

Just north of Green Lake, the old campus has 1920s stone buildings and a ginkgo avenue that turns gold in late autumn. Visitor access rules change, so carry your passport.

45 minutes · Best late Nov–Dec for the ginkgos

Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Arch 金马碧鸡坊

Two tall painted archways, rebuilt versions of centuries-old originals, mark the old commercial heart. Come at dusk, then graze the food lanes around Nanping Street 南屏街.

1–2 hours · Free · Best in the evening

Yuantong Temple 圆通寺

One of the city's oldest temples, with an unusual layout: you walk downhill from the gate to the main hall, which faces a pond crossed by stone bridges. It's an easy walk from Green Lake.

About 1 hour · Best in the morning

Yunnan Provincial Museum 云南省博物馆

The place to understand Yunnan before you travel it: bronzes from the ancient Dian kingdom, including cowrie containers topped with tiny figures, and Buddhist art from the Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms. It's in Guandu, southeast of the center; reserve ahead.

2–3 hours · Reservation needed · Good on a rainy day

Haigeng Dam and the Dianchi wetlands 海埂大坝 · 海洪湿地 · 宝丰湿地

Dianchi Lake 滇池 is Kunming's big lake. In winter, Haigeng Dam is the classic gull promenade, facing the Western Hills 西山. Haihong Wetland has dawn-redwood groves you can row among, and quieter Baofeng Wetland is the pick for sunset.

Half day · Dam is free · Nov–Mar for gulls; Baofeng at sunset

Dounan Flower Market 斗南花市

Often called Asia's largest cut-flower market: hall after hall of roses, lilies and orchids at wholesale prices. It's liveliest in the evening, when trading picks up.

1–2 hours · Free to browse · Best in the evening

Stone Forest 石林

A UNESCO-listed field of limestone pillars about 1.5 hours southeast by road, in the homeland of the Sani, a branch of the Yi people. Go early, and add the quieter Naigu Stone Forest 乃古石林 next door.

Full day · Leave early · Avoid Chinese public holidays

Where to stay

  • Green Lake and Yunnan University: Leafy, quieter and walkable to the old center. Our pick for a first visit.
  • Nanping Street and the archway: Livelier, with malls and the most food on your doorstep. Noisier at night.
  • Dianchi Lake, around Haigeng: Lake views and a slower pace, but you'll rely on taxis to reach the center.

What to eat

Kunming is a food city first. Our Kunming food guide goes deeper.

Small-pot rice noodles 小锅米线

Rice noodles cooked to order in a small copper pot with minced pork, pickled greens and chili. The everyday Kunming breakfast.

Breakfast or lunch · Any noodle shop · Say "shǎo là" (少辣) for less chili

Crossing-the-bridge noodles 过桥米线

A bowl of scalding broth arrives with raw sliced meat, quail egg and vegetables that you add yourself, then the noodles. An oil layer keeps it scalding; let it cool before sipping.

Lunch · Sit-down restaurants · A good first meal

Wild mushroom hotpot 菌子火锅

Yunnan's rainy-season obsession, with hour-long queues at popular places. Staff time the cooking; wait until they say it's ready, as some wild mushrooms are toxic when undercooked.

Dinner · Best Jun–Sep · Arrive early

Yunnan barbecue 烧烤

Skewers of meat, tofu, potato and vegetables grilled over charcoal and dusted with chili and dry spices. The late-night social meal; pick a busy place.

Evening · Street-side grills · Order a little of everything

Grilled rushan and flower cakes 烤乳扇 · 鲜花饼

Rushan is a thin sheet of cow's-milk cheese, grilled and brushed with rose jam. Flower cakes are flaky pastries filled with rose-petal paste.

Snack · Night-market stalls · Sweet

The honest take

Reviews are mixed on Kunming's sights and nearly unanimous about its food.

What people love: winter gulls, the ginkgo avenue, wetland sunsets and noodles on every corner. What they complain about: an old center that feels more rebuilt than historic, heavy traffic, long hotpot queues and a packed Stone Forest on public holidays. Be wary of cheap group day trips to the Stone Forest; across Yunnan, budget tours are where forced shopping stops turn up most. Read why we skip shopping tours.

Getting there and around

  • By air: Kunming Changshui International Airport 昆明长水国际机场 (KMG) has flights from across China and some Asian cities. Allow 40–50 minutes to the center by taxi, or take the metro.
  • By train: Bullet trains reach Dali in about 2 hours, Lijiang in about 3.5–4 and Xishuangbanna in 3–4. Trains leave from both Kunming South Station 昆明南站 and the central Kunming Station 昆明站 (most Lijiang trains use Kunming Station), so check your ticket. See trains.
  • In town: The metro is easy, and ride-hailing works through Alipay with a foreign card (see payments). Taxis are simplest between the Dianchi wetlands.
  • Stone Forest: About 1.5 hours by car, or 30 minutes by bullet train from Kunming South to Shilin West Station 石林西站, then a shuttle or taxi. A private driver makes it easy to add Naigu.
