Half-billion-year-old fossils at the Chengjiang museum, free with booking
Chengjiang, near Fuxian Lake
The Chengjiang fossil site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves soft-bodied sea creatures from the Cambrian explosion, more than 500 million years ago, in astonishing detail. The modern museum beside it tells that story with fossil specimens and displays. It's the best plan for a gray day at the lake.
What locals sayEven visitors who came only for the lake call it a surprise highlight, especially with children.
