Ailao Mountain went viral in 2024 as a mysterious 'forbidden' forest, and people began hiking into it. Its undeveloped core is steep, pathless primary forest inside a nature reserve, and entering it without permission is both illegal and dangerous. Xinping's developed areas, such as Shimen Gorge, the old Tea-Horse Road section and the Jinshan primeval forest, are open to visitors.
