Mojiang's black-face festival in early May: wear clothes you'll throw away
Mojiang county town
Over the May Day holiday, Mojiang's Sun Square hosts the Hani black-face festival: strangers smear each other with a black powder of coffee grounds and food-grade plant charcoal, a custom from Hani weddings meant to chase off bad luck. It runs alongside the Twins Festival, with a free twins parade, bonfire dancing and a long-street banquet.
What locals sayMost posts say nobody leaves the square with a clean face, so you might as well join in.
